BJP hits out at Siddaramaiah govt for not waiving off farmers' loans

Bengaluru, Mar 20: Criticising the government for not announcing loan waiver despite consecutive years of drought, opposition BJP in Karnataka Assembly today called the budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah as a budget of debt.

Initiating debate on the budget presented on March 15, BJP leader Jagadish Shettar hit out at the government for criticising demonetisation in the budget without giving any facts and figures regarding its impact on the state's economy.

The government has not made any announcement regarding loan waiver despite severe distress because of consecutive years of drought, he said.

Siddaramaiah who has a record of presenting 12 budgets to his credit has presented "a budget of loan and debt". The Government had proposed to mop up loans to the tune of Rs 37,000 crore when the state is already facing a debt of Rs 2,20,000 crore, he said.

As Shettar reminded Siddaramaiah of criticising the government against taking loan while he was in the opposition, the Chief Minister intervened stating the government should not take loan based on the availability, but on the basis of affordability.

He said the government was taking loan within the provisions of 25 per cent limit prescribed in the Karnataka Fiscal Responsibility Act.

Taking strong exception to criticism of demonetisation in the budget, he said without any valid reason the Congress government was against it just for political reasons.

"Where are the numbers? Inform the House and the people of the state how much demonetisation has affected the state. You just make a mention that stamps and registrations has been affected, but it is due to increase in the guidance value", he said.

Coming down heavily on the government for not announcing loan waiver to farmers, the former Chief Minister said "when you are presenting a budget of Rs 1,86,000 crore size, why cant you just waive off Rs 10,000 crore the farmers have taken as loan from cooperative banks."

Shettar also accused the government of indulging in "appeasement politics" by pointing out at certain farmer friendly schemes in the budget that are exclusively for minority community.

BJP today took part in the discussion on budget after holding up the proceedings of the House for two consecutive days with their protest demanding debate on the alleged diary entries of payoffs to Congress leaders.

Calling the government "adamant" for not agreeing to discussion on the issue relating to a diary reportedly recovered by the Income Tax department from the residence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's Parliamentary Secretary K Govindaraju, Shettar accused Congress of looting state's money and paying it to its high command.

BJP will take back its protest in the House keeping in mind the state's interest and to discuss important issues like drought concerning the state, adding the party will take the diary issue to the people in an effective way, he said.

Excerpts from the diary allegedly shows a few acronyms similar to names of some central Congress leaders, apart from Govindaraju, and the amount in crores of rupees against them, which was purportedly paid or received.

Mangaluru, May 4: The Mangaluru International Airport was besieged with a harrowing message of terror recently, when an email, purportedly from malevolent elements, menacingly declared the planting of bombs within the airport premises.

Addressed to the office of the airport authority, the missive, steeped in ominous overtones, bore the ominous signature of a terrorist faction, ominously named 'Terrorizers 111'.

The communication, disseminated in English, ominously detailed the clandestine emplacement of explosives in areas eluding facile detection, accompanied by a chilling warning of their imminent detonation. The threat, ominously looming over not only the infrastructure but also the airborne vessels, portended a catastrophic deluge of bloodshed and loss.

In response to this dire communiqué, airport authorities swiftly engaged the apparatus of law enforcement, dispatching urgent alerts to the vigilant guardians of public safety. Acting upon the dictates of higher echelons, a formal dossier of this menacing correspondence was meticulously compiled, cloaked in the veil of confidentiality to thwart any premature dissemination.

Mangaluru International Airport found itself in grim camaraderie with more than 30 counterparts under the aegis of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and private domains, all recipients of this chilling electronic diatribe. A comprehensive net of precautionary measures was swiftly cast, fortifying the bastions of security in anticipation of any nefarious designs lurking within the shadows.

Bengaluru: In a fresh development in the alleged Hassan sex abuse case, JD(S) MLA H D Revanna, who was accused of sexually harassing his house help, has been booked for kidnapping a victim allegedly sexually assaulted by his son, Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna. The case was filed late Thursday evening at the KR Nagar police station in Mysuru.

The 20-year-old complainant from KR Nagara accused one Sathish Babanna of taking his mother away forcibly and keeping her in an unknown location at the behest of Revanna.

As per the FIR, Revanna has been named as accused 1 while Babanna was accused 2. The duo were booked under IPC Sections 364A (kidnapping for ransom), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine a person) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

The complainant claimed that his mother, whose name and age were not revealed, had worked as a help in Revanna’s house and farm in Holenarasipura for six years, quit the job three years ago and returned to KR Nagara. She then worked for daily wages.

“Nearly three to four days before the Lok Sabha election, Sathish Babanna, who is known to us and hailed from our native place, took my mother to Holenarasipura after saying that Bhavani Revanna, the wife of MLA Revanna, had asked for her,” the complainant alleged, adding that Babanna dropped her back on the day of the polls.

Babanna allegedly told the victim’s mother and father to remain silent and evade the police if they came looking for them and to inform him of the developments.

On April 29, at around 9 pm, when the complainant was home, the suspect Babanna arrived, told the complainant’s mother that Revanna had asked for her and took her away on his motorcycle. The complainant claimed that he wasn’t aware of where Babanna took his mother and he had told him that if the police found her, a case would be registered and they would all go to jail.

On May 1, two of the complainant’s relatives called him on the phone and told him that there was a video of his mother being sexually assaulted by Prajwal and that it was a huge case, the FIR noted. He was also informed by his two friends of his "mother's videos being circulated".

When he asked Babanna later that night, he was allegedly told that there was a photo of his mother standing with a stick when Prajwal had quarrelled with someone earlier and an FIR had been registered. Babanna told the complainant that his mother would have to be released on bail, the FIR noted.

“Babanna told me not to speak on the matter on my phone and asked me to talk from a different phone,” he said, seeking action from the police.

The case has been transferred to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the Hassan sex scandal as per the government order.

Hassan MP and Lok Sabha election candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance Prajwal Revanna, who is facing an inquiry over the alleged sexual abuse of several women, said the truth will prevail.

The MP, who left the country as soon as the election to his constituency ended, has also sought seven days' time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka government to inquire into the huge cache of about 3,000 explicit videos and photos allegedly pertaining to him, which have gone viral on social media.

“As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID Bangalore through my advocate. Truth will prevail soon,” Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda, said in a post on X.

A case has been registered against MLA and former minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal at Holenarasipura on a complaint lodged by their former cook and relative for allegedly sexually harassing her.

She also alleged that Prajwal made video calls to her daughter and spoke in an objectionable manner, which forced her to block him.

The MP who is seeking re-election from Hassan on a JD(S) ticket, shared a letter by his lawyer Arun G to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the SIT, in which he has sought seven days' time to appear before the official because he is abroad.
