Bangalore, Jun 8: The BJP and JD(S) have decided to continue their poll-alliance during the looming Legislative Council election too. BJP leader and businessman D U?Mallikarjun, who filed his papers as an Independent for the Council elections from the Assembly on Saturday, is likely to get the support of the BJP and JD(S). Mallikarjun had unsuccessfully contested as a BJP candidate from the Shantinagar seat in the 2013 Assembly elections.

Kumaraswamy, who accompanied Mallikarjun when he filed his papers, said the party has a surplus of 11 votes in the Assembly, while the BJP?has 15 extra votes. Mallikarjun has become the acceptable candidate for both the parties, he said. To win the seat, a minimum of 25 votes are required.

The JD(S) will field one more candidate. The Council elections are being held for a total of seven seats.

The Congress is yet to announce its candidates.

The two BJP?leaders who filed nomination papers on Saturday are: Eshwarappa for the Council elections and Prabhakar Kore for the Rajya Sabha elections. A host of BJP leaders, including Union Minister Ananth Kumar accompanied Kore, to the returning officer 's chamber in Vidhana Soudha, where the nominations were filed.

Kupendra Reddy, who is with the Congress, filed his nomination papers as the JD(S) candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. This, after the Congress failed to respond to his request for a ticket to contest the elections.

Reddy, a businessman, had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections in 2008 as the Congress nominee from Bommanahalli.

The JD(S) has 40 MLAs, while the required number of votes to win a Rajya Sabha seat is a minimum of 45. The JD(S) has prepared the ground to garner votes of friends ' in other parties.

Reddy is a close associate of the Deve Gowda family for decades. JD(S) floor leader in the Assembly H?D?Kumaraswamy said, “If we do not field a candidate, we would have to explain to the voters as to why we did not, despite having 40 MLAs. We have just two members in Lok Sabha. So, we decided to field a candidate.”

Sources in JD(S) said Reddy has friends ' in all parties. Hence, he can manage to get the required numbers.

In addition, the party wanted to checkmate Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is planning to field a third candidate from the Congress for the Rajya Sabha elections.

The Congress, on its strength, can win two seats and will be left with a surplus votes of 32. It would require a minimum of 13 more votes to win the third seat. The Congress would have liked to bank on JD(S) votes.

However, Siddaramaiah was not in favour of joining hands with the JD(S). Hence, he plans to push the candidature of Channa Reddy, a realtor. The JD(S) presumes that the Congress may not compete for the third seat, with Kupendra Reddy becoming the JD(S) candidate.

In case the Congress takes the risk of fielding a candidate for a third seat, the possibility of the first two candidates of the party losing cannot be ruled out, the JD(S) feels.

The Congress, during the last Council elections, faced embarrassment following the defeat of its official candidate Iqbal Saradagi, while Independent candidate Byrati Suresh, who was projected as Siddaramaiah 's choice, managed to win.

JD(S)?MLAs H?D?Revanna and Y?S?V?Datta accompanied Kupendra Reddy while filing the nomination papers in the Vidhana Soudha on Saturday.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
