Mangaluru, Oct 14: Even before it could reach the Yettinahole project site, the four-day padayatra led by Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel against water diversion came to an abrupt end on Tuesday evening thanks to police intervention.
The Hassan Police detained Mr Kateel, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje and others under the Karnataka Police Act at the Dakshina Kannada-Hassan district border soon after the group crossed the border.
“They were released later and were allowed to go back,” Hassan Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta said.
Asked whether he had any directions from the top brass in this connection, Mr. Gupta said that he needs no instructions for day-to-day administration.
The police felt that over a 1,000 people visiting the Yettinahole project site might have resulted in a law and order problem. Also, the padayatra during the night could have affected vehicular movement on the Shiradi Ghat, he said.
The police also felt that the padayatris, who were not familiar with the terrain, might be inviting trouble, Mr. Gupta said. To a question on individual liberty, he said it was not the question of individual liberty as there was a large number of people. Though the project area is not declared out of bounds, the presence of a large gathering is not desirable, he added.
Mr. Gupta said that a posse of about 300 policemen was deployed at the border, where barricades had been put up. The barricades were placed to ensure the safety of the padayatris as well as for smooth movement of vehicles. The padayatra did not affect movement of vehicles, he added.
Mr. Kateel had commenced the padayatra from Mangaluru on Saturday and had been covering about 30 km every day on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway. Though he was supposed to address a public meeting at Gundya at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, the meeting started by about 5 p.m. before the padayatris set on foot for the final leg of the padayatra after 6 p.m. when darkness fell.
