Dharward, Jun 16: In an incident that sent shockwaves across Dharwad, a zilla panchayat member belonging to the BJP and representing Hebballi constituency was hacked to death in an early morning attack on Wednesday.

Police said Yogeeshgouda arrived at the gym in his brand new Innova SUV and was reading the newspaper in the verandah when a group of four to six persons entered the premises, threw chilli powder in his eyes and attacked him with sharp weapons and iron rods. He was hit on the face, head and neck. His right hand also had injuries, while the jaw was completely broken.
Yogeeshgouda tried to escape by running inside the gym, but the assailants followed him and attacked him again, killing him instantly. They then fled the scene.
Yogeeshgouda was found lying in a pool of blood. The police rushed to the spot and conducted the panchanama,' before shifting the body to the district civil hospital for post- mortem. A case has been registered at the suburban police station.
While the motive for killing is not clear, the police are investigating the case. They are looking at two angles. One is a land dispute with a family in Morab, Navalgund taluk, and the other is his land dealings.
Yogeeshgouda's elder brother Uday was murdered in 2000 due to old enmity. He had 28 cases in different police stations and his name figured in the history-sheeters' list. Yoogeshgouda is survived by wife, three daughters and a son.
