BJP's campaign strategy to be weaved around Modi, BSY

New Delhi, Sept 9: The BJP is set to exploit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image in Karnataka Assembly polls, as the party is planning to have his public meetings in seven different regions ahead of the elections early next year.

The BJP is conceptualising a high-voltage campaign strategy that will be built around its twin mascots -- Modi and chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa.

The dates and places of Modi’s public meetings will be worked out on the feedback from the state leadership, a senior party leader aware of electoral strategy stated.

The BJP leaders believe that their electioneering will pick up as Yeddyurappa hits the ground to undertake state-wide Nava Karnataka Nirama Yatra that would crisscross all the 224 Assembly segments.

Without getting into the details, BJP sources stated that the campaigning would have unique features drawing multiple sources, including social media platforms, to highlight the NDA government achievements and expose ‘corrupt’ Congress regime in the state. The party sources said that unlike other southern states, they are in a better position in Karnataka by having strong local leaders in Ananth Kumar and K S Eswarappa, apart from their tallest figure Yeddyurappa.

Claiming that Yeddyurappa’s traction among his powerful community of Lingayats is still strong despite the Congress trying to outwit the former chief minister, the BJP is also eyeing the Vokkaligas to make up in its weaker regions of south Karnataka. The party would utilise the services of its Vokkaliga leaders such as Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, former deputy chief minister R Ashoka and MP Shobha Karandlaje for massive outreach in their community largely spread across Mysuru, Hassan and Mandya.

BJP president Amit Shah had last month visited the Adichunchanigiri Mutt during his three-day long trip of Karnataka. The Mutt which has influence over the Vokkaligas, which constitute about 7 to 12% of the population, is linked to the Nath sub-tradition of Shaivism in Hindus. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is also chief priest of Gorakhnath Mutt of the Nath tradition.

BJP sources stated that some of the leaders of the JD(S), which has hold over the sizeable Vokaligas, are in touch with them to cross over. The party is also energising its booth-level workers.

Of the 54,000 booths that are spread over 224 Assembly segments, the poll managers have already assigned workers to 44,000 booths. The remaining would be done in next couple of months.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
