Bengaluru, Jun 10: A two-and-a-half-year-old boy from Bengaluru on a vacation in Chennai lost three fingers on his right hand when he fell while going down on an escalator at a shopping mall on Anna Salai.
The shocking accident took place around noon on Tuesday when the child Krishik Santosh was taking the escalator from the first floor to the ground floor in the mall with his mother Saranya Pethi and his grandparents.
Onlookers said the child's fingers remained stuck for a couple of minutes as the confused mall staff ran helter-skelter, before pressing the emergency button, bringing the escalator to a halt.
"The boy kept crying as his hand got stuck and his fingers got crushed between the metal sheet and floor," said a security woman at the exit gate of the mall. The hand was removed after dismantling a portion of the escalator. The hand was profusely bleeding and the child was rushed to the nearby Government Royapettah Hospital where doctors suggested amputation. He was then referred to the Government Stanley Hospital for treatment.
Police said the parents were frustrated with the response of the hospital staff and insisted on immediate treatment. "They were not satisfied with the treatment and moved to a private hospital," said an investigating officer at Thousand Lights police station.
The accident happened in front of the Regal shoe store. A salesperson who witnessed the accident said he and others came out of the store hearing the cries of the mother and the child. "The child had come to the shop with his parents to purchase shoes an hour before the accident. He was cheerful and happy," he said. Servicemen from the escalator company rushed to the scene and dismantled the steps. They found one of the severed fingers. Police said the doctors at a private hospital in Kilpauk conducted a surgery to attach the finger. The boy is now under observation. They added that the family was not keen on lodging a complaint.
Santhosh Ram and his wife hail from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, but are settled in Bengaluru. They had come to the city two days ago and were staying at La Woods Hotel on Woods Road off Anna Salai. They came for shopping as the hotel is located just a few metres from the mall. They visited the first floor looking for the dress and came down. They allowed the child to stand on the escalator after he insisted, police said.
