Mangalore, Sep 29: Mangalore woke up to another revolutionary move of appointment of two widows from the Dalit community as priestesses of Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Kshetra by the temple management committee at Kudroli here on Monday.
Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara temple, which has witnessed the onset of several new traditions, had witnessed the revolutionary tradition of the appointment of widows as priestesses during the Dasara festivities last year.
This year, the temple management committee, under the leadership of former Union minister and pioneer of the temple B Janardhan Poojary, two Dalit widows were installed as priestesses of the temple. This move seeks to put an end to the practice of caste and gender inequality in temples.
Lakshmi (65) and Chandravati (46) performed pooja to the presiding deity of the temple and also offered pooja to goddess Annapoorneshwari. They offered'theertha' and prasada to devotees on the occasion.
The women were earlier brought to the sanctum sanctorium of the temple in a procession with the beating and recital of drums and'vadya mela', led by Mr Poojary.
The new priestesses, performed pooja to the statue of Sree Narayana Guru, social reformer and founder of the temple and also performed poojas at the shrines of Shani, Ganapati, Shiva, Annapoorneshwari, Nava Grahas, Krishna, and Hanuman, along with the existing priestesses.
On the occasion, Mr Poojary told presspersons that Chandravati, resident of Ranipura in Ullal, had been married to late Krishnappa, and Lakshmi, resident of Urwa-Chilimbi, was earlier married to late Sadashiva.
Trustees of the temple management board, committee members and several devotees participated in the ceremony.
