Udupi, Nov 8: Vishvesha Theertha Swamiji, the chief pontiff of Pejawar Mutt, who is known for controversial statements, has strongly supported Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya, and asked him not to resign from his post merely because allegations were made against him.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference here on Saturday, he said that merely allegations against a person did not necessarily mean that he was guilty of the accusations. Minister Anjaneya has worked towards the welfare and development of Dalits and backward classes in the past, he said, adding that he had complete faith in him.
The Opposition has been demanding resignation of Anjaneya following the sting operation by a TV channel which showed the minister’s wife accepting bribe.
'Tipu Jayanti'
Calling Tipu Sultan, an controversial historical figure, the seer said that it was not right on the part of the state government to observe the birth anniversary of such a person.
Celebrating birth centenaries of non-controversial figures like Vivekananda, Basavanna and Kanakadasa is justified. However, there is no justification for celebrating the birth centenary of Tipu, he opined.
