Bengaluru, Mar 29: Janata Dal (Secular), which has forged a pre-poll alliance with Bahujan Samaj Party in Karnataka, is now in talks with another prominent party of Uttar Pradesh - Samajawadi Party for a similar alliance.
JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda said: “While the SP has asked for five seats, we have already announced our candidates in three of the constituencies that they have identified.”
He also said that the party is in talks with Left parties for an alliance. “I have spoken to senior national leaders. I have told them (Left) that I will be campaigning for their candidates in four to five Assembly constituencies,” he said.
BSP supremo Mayawati’s election rallies are also being finalised. BSP, in an alliance with the JD(S), is contesting 20 seats across the state. “She will campaign in Bombay Karnataka, Hyderabad Karnataka and Mysuru region,” Gowda said.
Alliance with NCP on shaky ground
On the other hand JD(S)’ alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sharad Pawar looks shaky.
The JD(S) is closely watching the moves of Pawar who is expected to participate in programmes, organised in Belagavi by the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES), on March 31.
Though the MES is yet to get permission for the rally after Kannada organisations opposed it, local MES leaders said that Mr. Pawar will be visiting to hear grievances of the farmers.
While MES seeks the merger of Belagavi into Maharashtra, Mr. Pawar, in the past, has stoked similar sentiments as a Congress leader.
“We are very clear and the alliance will be called off if Mr. Pawar attends the MES-organised rally,” said Gowda.
The JD(S) and NCP had entered into a seat-sharing agreement, and the former had announced that it was willing to give five to seven seats, especially in Bombay Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka region, where Pawar has a following.
