Mangalore, Nov 29: Members of the district unit of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) staged a protest assembly in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Friday, demanding legalisation of the land acquired by the landless families in the district.
Addressing the protestors assembled, working president of the unit Raghu Dharmasena said that the Congress government had been resorting to anti-farmer policies and cheating the farmers and minorities by providing them with a meagre amount of land for cultivation. The land issue has become a source of votes for the Congress party. Dr Ambedkar's vision was distribution of agricultural land to Dalits, but the Congress has cheated them by providing them only 1.5 cents of land for cultivation. Hence, the farmers and minorities in India have remained poor, he said, urging that the land acquired illegally by Dalits and poor farmers for cultivation and their livelihood should be legalised.
The protestors also demanded that their land occupation should be regularised by conferring rights of land ownership to them without any further delay.
They also urged the government to provide a minimum of 5 acres of land to Dalits from the Depressed Class Land in the district for cultivation.
“Till today, the DC land has not been distributed to the landless people from the SC/ST community. The district administration should distribute this land which has been acquired illegally by others in the district,” urged Mr Dharmasena.
The protestors also urged for the constitution of a Land Justice Board in the state.
