Bangalore, Mar 11: Congress in Karnataka put up a sterling performance in the elections to urban local bodies as political heavyweight B S Yeddyurappa played spoilsport to ruling BJP but made no big independent electoral impact ahead of assembly polls just two months away.

Congress won 1,960 wards as against 906 each secured by BJP and JD(S) of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda in the March seven poll counting of votes for which was taken up today.

The polls in urban pockets of the state were seen as a "semi-final", coming as it does in the run up to assembly elections due by May.

The Karnataka Janatha Paksha of former Chief Minister Yeddyurappa, who quit BJP in November last made its electoral debut securing 274 wards.

The former BJP strongman dented the ruling party's prospects but failed to make much impact statewide on its own, exemplified by his party's performance in his home district of Shimoga where KJP could secure only 34 wards out of 176 with Congress bagging 64, JD(S) 40 and BJP 24.

The BSR Congress of former Minister B Sriramulu, who had also broken away from BJP and tested the political waters, won 86 wards, eating into latter's votes.

Independents made it big, winning 776 wards and are all set to play a key part in formation of urban local bodies where the elections have thrown up fractured verdict.

Elections were announced to 208 urban local bodies (4976 wards) -- seven city corporations, 43 city municipal corporations, 66 town municipal councils and 92 town panchyats.

Congress won the city corporations of Davanagere, Mangalore and Bellary. BJP was routed in Bellary, where the mining barons Reddy brothers, had a stranglehold, drawing a blank. Mysore and Gulbarga city corporation elections were marked by a fractured mandate, with Congress emerging as the single largest party.

The only saving grace for BJP was from Hubli-Dharwad city corporation, the home town of Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, where the party bagged 33 wards of a total of 67 but is not in a position to come to power on its own.

Candidates had won in 85 wards unopposed while there was no nomination in one ward in Chikkaballapur city municipal council.

"It's a warning bell to all political parties", Shettar said in his reaction. "There was illusion in some quarters that BJP will be wiped out. It has not happened. BJP is intact".

Noting that a large number of independents have won, he said this showed that local issues weighed heavily on the minds of voters, Shettar added.

Congress saw the outcome as a "clear mandate" in its favour and a precursor to the coming elections. "It's clear that people are yearning for change", President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, G Parameshwara said.

JD(S) state unit President H D Kumarswamy said the party would debate on the reasons why it fell short of 300-400 wards it had expected to win and take corrective action for the assembly polls.

In the last elections to urban local bodies in 2007, out of the total 5,007 wards, Congress had come first winning 1606, followed by JD(S) 1502 and BJP 1180.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging him to extend all possible help to the victims of JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna's alleged sexual abuse.

In a letter to Siddaramaiah, Gandhi condemned the actions of Revanna, an MP from Hassan in Karnataka, and accused him of enjoying immunity with the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

In a veiled attack on Modi, the Congress leader said he has never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women.

"I request you to kindly extend all possible support to the victims," Gandhi said in his letter to the Karnataka chief minister.

"They deserve our compassion and solidarity as they fight their battle for justice. We have a collective duty to ensure that all parties responsible for these heinous crimes are brought to book," he added.

Describing the incidents as "horrific sexual violence" unleashed by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Gandhi alleged that Revanna sexually assaulted and filmed hundreds of women over several years.

"Many who looked up to him as a brother and son were brutalised in the most violent manner and robbed of their dignity. The rape of our mothers and sisters warrants the strictest possible punishment."

"I am deeply shocked to learn that as far back as December 2023, our Home Minister Shri Amit Shah was informed by Shri G Devaraje Gowda about Prajwal Revanna's antecedents, especially his history of sexual violence and the presence of videos filmed by the perpetrator," the former Congress chief said.

He said what is even more shocking is that despite these gruesome allegations being brought to the notice of the seniormost leadership of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre, Modi campaigned and canvassed for a "mass rapist".

"Furthermore, the Union government wilfully allowed him to flee India to derail any meaningful investigation. The deeply perverse nature of these crimes and the absolute immunity enjoyed by Prajwal Revanna with the blessings of the Prime Minister and Home Minister deserves the strongest condemnation," Gandhi said.

"In my two decades in public life, I have never come across a senior public representative who has constantly chosen silence in the face of untold violence against women. From our wrestlers in Haryana to our sisters in Manipur, Indian women are bearing the brunt of the Prime Minister's tacit support for such criminals," he alleged.

In this backdrop, Gandhi said the Congress has a moral duty to fight for justice for "our mothers and sisters".

"I understand that the Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the grave allegations, and a request has been made to the Prime Minister to cancel Prajwal Revanna's diplomatic passport and get him extradited to India at the earliest," he said.

H D Revanna, the Janata Dal (Secular) MLA from Holenarasipura in Karnataka's Hassan district, is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda and elder brother of former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy. He is facing allegations of sexually abusing women.
