
Udupi, Jun 25: Cadres from the Youth Congress staged a rail roko on Wednesday in Udupi demanding that the Centre roll back the rail fare hike immediately. The Union Railway Minister had announced that the rail fare hike would come into force from Wednesday.
The agitators stopped the Rajadhani Express train for more than half an hour at Indrali railway station.
Condemning the sudden hike, the Youth Congress leaders and cadre assembled in the city and took out a march to the railway station. Former minister and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes also took part in the protest.
As the police tried to stop them from proceeding, they walked into railway gate where they blockaded the tracks. As a result, a train coming to the station, at that time was detained at the approach to the station for some time.
Some activists even clambered into the loco pilot 's cabin while others settled down on the track.
For about half an hour the activists raised slogans against the Union Government and demanded the roll back of rail fare hike.
Speaking on the occasion Mr Fernandes said at no time in the last 10 years had the rail fare been increased so steeply.
Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency Youth Congress president Sunil Bangera, Udupi Youth Congress president Vikas Shetty also took part in the protest.
