Bidar, Oct 27: Five vehicles were gutted when a gas cylinder in a car exploded at a garage in the city on Monday afternoon. The intensity of the explosion was such that the tin roof of Sai Auto Scan Garage, near the central bus stand, was blown away.
The incident occurred when garage owner Ratankumar Nandagouli was undertaking repairs in a Maruti car. There was a short circuit and this resulted in a fire. The car seat was burnt in the fire. Even as efforts to douse the fire failed, the cylinder exploded. The car which was under repair and the other four vehicles were damaged. Many tools used for repair works were also damaged. Residents in the surrounding houses were shocked to see a fire engulfing the garage. They informed the fire personnel who arrived at the spot and doused the fire within an hour.
A bigger tragedy was averted as the garage workers had been for lunch. The losses due to the fire has been put at Rs 13 lakh as per initial estimates. There were no fire extinguishers in the garage, said an officer of the fire department.
