Mangaluru, Apr 6: Revenue minister Srinivas Prasad on Monday flagged off a publicity campaign vehicle at Circuit House and launched the district-wide publicity and awareness campaign for Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC) scheduled to commence on Saturday.

Speaking after launching the campaign, he said that the caste census was a step towards ensuring social justice to all communities and classes of the society. The caste-based census has been initiated in order to protect the interests of the backward communities and to gauge the extent of reach of schemes for the poor and backward classes such as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Hence, it is necessary to bring awareness to the people with regard to the purpose of the census, he said.
He asked the people of the district to make use of the census which would be advantageous to them.
Speaking about revenue adalats, Mr Prasad said that the revenue department had conducted nearly 6,000 adalats in the state in the past two years. There have been amendments in several existing legislations pertaining to the revenue departments, he said.
According to the district information officer, the publicity vehicle will travel to all village panchayats and town municipalities in all taluks of Dakshina Kannada in the next 10 days to spread awareness among people about the caste-based census and dispel negative notions about it.
Health minister U T Khader, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, MLC Ivan D'Souza, MLA J R Lobo and others were present on the occasion.
