Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 5: Despite the imposition of prohibitory orders near counting centres across Dakshina Kananda and Udupi districts, winning candidates and their supporters were seen holding victory celebrations.
Workers of major and minor political parities too actively took part in celebrations raising slogans in support of their respective parties.
The elections were not fought on party basis but a vast majority of candidates in coastal Karnataka owed their allegiance to two main political parties – the BJP and the Congress party. Hundreds of other candidates owed allegiance to minor parties including JD(S), SDPI CPI(M).
Even though the complete results are yet to be known, political parties have started claiming victory in the region.
The Congress party leaders are claiming that the Congress backed candidates won maximum Gram Panchayats in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
On the other hand BJP leaders are claiming that candidates backed by saffron party have won maxim Gram Panchayats.
Counting of May 29 polls was held simultaneously in all taluk head quarters in the twin districts. More details to follow.
