Gowthami P, of MES PU College of Arts, Commerce and Science, is the topper in the Science stream with a total of 595 marks out of 600. Veena S Reddy from Sri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain PU College who secured 98.83 percentage topped in Commerce and Hitankshi M Trivedi, from Mount Carmel College topped the Arts stream by securing 96.5 percentage.

All three have scored a centum in most of the subjects. Speaking to Deccan Herald, Gowthami, who aspires to be a doctor, said, “I am very happy. I expected to do well, but I did not think I would top”. She scored 100 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, while she secured 99 in Biology and 97 in Kannada. She studied for 12 to 16 hours every day to achieve this feat.

“Apart from studying daily, I concentrated well in my tuition classes,” she said. The student’s father works in a private company and her mother is a homemaker.

It’s a 100 upon 100 all the way for Veena S Reddy, too. She has scored centum in three subjects: Accountancy, Statistics and Basic Maths and 99 in Business Studies. The student has also scored 100 in Sanskrit and 94 in English.

“I expected 595, instead of 593, but I am really happy with my marks”. Her father Jaganath Reddy is a chartered accountant by profession and mother Lakshmi Devi is a homemaker. Expressing her joy, her mother said she expected Veena to secure a rank, but did not imagine that she would top the State.

Veena wants to be a lawyer. “I started my preparations three months prior to the exams and took my college preparatory exams seriously. I have got a seat for law at Christ University, but I am waiting for my CLAT results, after which I will decide my next step”.

Concentrating in the class helped Hitankshi achieve the high score. She aims to make it to the civil services as an IAS officer.

“This feels out of this world,” said an ecstatic Hitankshi. Her father Mayank Trivedi is a government official and mother Nita Trivedi is a homemaker. Hitankshi has scored a centum in Economics and Psychology. She has secured 99 in History, 92 in Sociology, 90 in English and 98 in French.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
