Mudigere/Mangalore, Aug 24: In a swift action, the Mudigere police in Chikmagalur district have arrested nine BJP and pro-Hindutva activists for celebrating the untimely death of noted literary figure U R Ananthamurthy, in Mudigere on Saturday.

The police also registered a suo-moto case against the accused in connection with bursting crackers to rejoice the death of the Jnanapith awardee.
The arrested have been identified as Hullemane Chandru, president of Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Mudigere, Hallibail Girish, BJP worker from Banakal, Kannehalli Bharat, Bajrang Dal activist, Praveen Poojary, BJP Yuva Morcha president, Mudigere, Beejavalli Bharath, BJP worker and four others.
The five arrested on Saturday have been released on bail, after an FIR was registered against them.
The other arrested have been identified as Anil Kanachur, V K Praveen, Anoop and Punith.
The accused have been booked under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 144 (unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapon), 147 (rioting), 149 and 290 (public nuisance) of the Indian Penal Code.
The accused had reportedly gathered in a public place as a group and burst crackers to celebrate the sad demise of U R Ananthamurthy on Friday. It is said that the accused Beejavalli Bharath had resorted to bursting crackers on the occasion.
The arrests have been made by the police within hours after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah issued a warning against such appalling celebrations which amounted to disrespect to the famed writer.
Earlier, on Friday, state BJP president Prahlad Joshi had condemned the celebrations and claimed that the miscreants did not belong to his party.
In Mangalore too, alleged Hindutva activists had burst crackers at Kadri and Car Street, besides Suratkal on the outskirts of the city.
Kadri police have registered a case against the accused but no arrests have been made in this regard.
