Mangalore, Sep 4: The alleged religious symbols found in the uniforms distributed to students by a Catholic run institution in Belthangady Taluk of Dakshina Kannada district has triggered controversy.
Located at Bedrabettu in Indabettu village the Mariambika School is run under the auspices of Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Belthangady. A considerable number of non-Christian students including Hindus and Muslims are also studying in this institution.
On Wednesday a tense atmosphere had prevailed in the village after dozens of parents, most of them Hindus staged a demonstration outside the school condemning the decision of school authorities to incorporate a religious symbol on the uniform.
It is learnt that the parents including members of Hindu outfits on Tuesday had complained to the school management that the t-shirts, belts and identify cards distributed by them contain Cross symbol. However, next day the angry parents decided to stage a demonstration against the school management.
However, the jurisdictional Belthangady police rushed to the spot and managed to bring the situation under control. They also discussed the issue with agitating parents and school management.
The parents agreed to withdrew their agitation and leave the spot after school management assured them of temporarily withdrawing the controversial uniform.
Fr Joseph Valiaparambil, Vicar General and spokesperson of the Belthangady Diocese, said that the school management had in fact incorporated the school logo on the uniform and not the religious symbol. However, the school management has decided to withdraw them following the complaints by the parents. “A final decision will be taken in this regard after holding discussions with the parents,” he said.
