Udupi, May 27: Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj launched a clean-up campaign with a vow to transform the temple city into a fully clean city within a year.
Speaking at the launch of the health and cleanliness campaign jointly undertaken by Udupi district administration, city municipal council and Department of Health and Family Welfare, Udupi on Monday, he said that all efforts would be taken to materialise the dream of transforming the city into a 100 percent ' clean city by the end of a year.
There are a total of 29,500 residences and 7,000 commercial establishments in the city. Out of these, only 70 percent are paying garbage collection toll of Rs 30 to self-help groups assigned by city municipal council for collection and disposal of garbage. The remaining 30 percent are disposing garbage at unauthorised places, which poses a problem to the maintenance of cleanliness in the city, he said.
He said that a five-member team of youth and students would be constituted in each ward as part of the campaign to convince the above mentioned 30 percent to pay the collection toll for proper disposal of garbage. Through such measures, it is possible for the materialisation of a clean city, Mr Madhwaraj said.
Speaking after releasing leaflets of the cleanliness campaign, Udupi deputy commissioner Dr Muddu Mohan said that proper collection and disposal of garbage was highly essential, in view of the cleanliness and health factor of the city.
