Bangalore, May 27: The Department of Pre University Education 's proposal to open 461 pre-university colleges across the State has been rejected by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah due to financial constraints.

At a meeting with Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar and other officials, the chief minister said it was impossible to consider the request.
The department sources said despite their best efforts to convince Siddaramaiah on the need to start these colleges, the proposal was not entertained. The total requirement for starting these colleges was placed at Rs 250 crore.
At present, total number of junior colleges is 4,189, including government, aided, unaided and corporation colleges. Siddaramaiah has, however, agreed to consider starting 112 new government schools in the State. Officials said he has sought further information in this regard.
An allocation of Rs 630 crore has been sought for upgrading infrastructure in degree colleges across the State.
The sources said that Mr. Siddaramaiah also looked into the modalities of the transfer of teachers of government primary and high schools.
Mr. Siddaramaiah, according to the sources, said that he would consider the Department of Public Instruction 's proposal to amend the rules framed under the Karnataka State Civil Services (Regulation of Transfer of Teachers) Act 2007, so that it would benefit more teachers seeking transfers.
It is said that Mr. Siddaramaiah instructed senior officials to tour the State and monitor the functioning of the Block Education Officers and the Deputy Directors of Public Instruction.
