Combating Power Crisis

March 23, 2010

"Beware the Ides of March" said Shakespeare and "April is the cruelest month" wrote T. S. Eliot. For students preparing for exams, this has much been truer.

As March-April dawns, exam phobia spreads its frenzy all over student community in India. Adding to the phobia factor, the power disruption becomes rampant too. Students, parents and teachers undergo a dilemma during this phase. It seems that it is a curse to the citizens, while many governments have failed to provide fool-proof solution.

As summer graces, the governments come out with statements that there would be shortage of water for production of electricity. Investing enormous funds for Hydro -Thermal based power generation stations has gone futile to suffice the power demands, resulting in unstable power generation and distribution criterion, and so on.

It is better to light a candle, rather than cursing darkness

Practically, these power generation stations consume vast time, labour, investment and land for its operations. However, the government cannot be blamed alone, since it is a responsibility of each individual to save and conserve energy for better utilization factors.

The Government of India, through its independent nodes is encouraging technologies to generate sustainable energy through Windmills, Solar Panels, Bio-Fuels, Co-generation, under sea turbines and other ways also. But still the country faces acute shortage of power.

Although citizens protest against the power supply and distribution authorities, not much improvement has surfaced, leaving behind the unsolved mystery of students’ agony. As a result, students fail to obtain the projected academic performance that hinders their career altogether.

“If one is not a part of trouble, then why not be a part of Solution?” - Anonymous

It must be bought to notice that Hydro-Thermal power stations causes environmental hazards by releasing green house gases increasing the temperature and increasing the Ozone Layer depletion. So, what is the efficient Solution seems to be a Million Dollar question at the moment.

Well, the resources to contain normal power supply against demand can be achieved by switching over to Eco-Friendly Technologies. Government has taken some initiatives to avoid pilferage of power, yet has not reached substantial levels to provide sufficient power demands.

There are certain solutions that could be probed to reach stabalisation of power demands. The Ministry of Natural and Renewable Energy, encourages Public Sectors, Private players, NGO’s and Private-Public Ventures to resort in generation of power to obtain sustainable forms of Energy.

The, Dynamic Tower’ Dubai, uses Wind turbines to generate approximately 30 % of its own energy demand. The supportive technology also uses solar panels as a part of harvesting the energy.

In India, the same technology has just peeped in in the form of INDIAN GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL (IGBC) advocating implementation and adaptation of sustainable forms of energy.

So, what exactly is Green Building and how does it facilitates the inhabitants?

"A green building is one which uses less water, optimises energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building."

The best features of Green Buildings are:

1) They are Eco-Friendly.

2) They have own source of (Partial) energy production by combining Wind/Solar and Recycling plants.

3) They are built using recycled construction materials, cutting down the costs and avoiding usage of hazardous chemicals.

4) They have natural ambience, natural ventilation, energy source and recycling plant imbibed so as to reduce dependency on conventional energy sources.

5) Green Buildings last longer than the constructions using readymade construction materials.

It is an overwhelming factor influencing the real estate developers to cling on to the newer and safer version of building materials that cuts down the cost of raw materials and durability of the construction.

People have wrong conceptions regarding alternative power sources. As they witness failures of major sources they resort to devices or gadgets like UPS/INVERTORS & ALTERNATORS. They seem to forget that all the alternative sources require major source to backup the energy storage device for continuous operation. Sarcastically, they would have flouted that it too consumes energy and money from the major derivatives.

Alternative Energy Sources such as Hydel (Hydro) Power Generation, Geo-Thermal Power Generation, Bio-Mass Power Generation, Solar Energy Power Generation, Wind Mill Power Generation etc should be utilised to the maximum to meet power requirements.

Concluding with a brain teaser:

Steve and Sally were sitting in their front room one night. While Steve was watching T.V. his wife Sally was reading. All of a sudden the power goes off and Steve decides to go to bed, but Sally keeps on reading. Without using artificial light, Sally finishes reading her book. How?
