A family of 7 members living at Baajar, 10 KMs away from Uppinangady, is a picture of patience inexplicable.
The story of this family is heart rending. 10 years ago, they lost their beloved mother. Their 50 year old father who was suffering from a continuous illness expired too.
The seven siblings now are leading a life of utmost difficulty. Out of these seven, six are girls of which, no one has been able to get married, including the first daughter, who has almost turned 40 now. The last daughter has turned 20 as well.
Most of them had to put a break on their studies in 6th or 7th standards. Abdul Razzaq, the son managed to study up to 8th standard. He has his own set of health problems that do not allow him to carry out laborious work, which leaves his unmarried sisters with no option but to earn a living themselves by rolling beedies.
What is the local Jamath (Chekkar Jamath Committee) doing? Well, if Abdul Razzaq’s words are anything to go by, the Jamath hasn’t done much for them really. Abdul Razzaq reveals that the Jamath Committee did help them when his father passed away. They even gave an assurance of further financial help but that has not reached the family so far and none of the office bearers of the Jamath Committee pays a visit to their house, he laments.
When asked, S B Darimi, the Imam of the Central Jumma Masid, Uppinangady, opined that the reason for the said situation is only the dowry system. It might not be happen in Arab countries, because there the system of Mahr (obligatory bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) is practiced unfailingly. However, related Umara / Ulamas here are responsible for the present issue, he revealed.
A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim. So it is our duty to respond to our brothers and sisters who are enduring the pain day and night. There may be a lot of donors willing to to help this poor family. But at the same time, a responsible and farsighted person has to come forth. Insha Allah, one prays that it happens.
