Meet Muhammad Qamar: the talented little 'Haafiz Saab'

June 14, 2010

Memorising the Qur’an hardly makes news these days, especially with Hifz courses prevailing in almost all Qur’anic schools and major Islamic institutions. But, 10-year-old Muhammad Qamar has stolen the limelight by memorising the entire glorious Qur’an not only at a very young age, but in record time as well.

Far ahead from his little age, he can recite the entire 114 chapters of the glorious Quran with his super-memory, power and patience. One can notice the earnestness, piety, and tranquility in his spontaneous recitation. He not only has etched the entire Qur’an in his mind, but also can recite over one hundred ahadith and equal number of du’as. He has achieved this feat while undergoing temporal education too!

Muhammad Qamar is the only son (among the three children) of his lucky parents Taha Hasan and Rasheeda, and a resident of Melangady in Ullal. The Iqra Arabic School, which is managed by Maulana Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi Education Foundation, Mangalore, acted as the springboard for him to achieve the great feat.

Taha Hasan, who works in Sharjah, dared to enroll his 7 year old child, (who was a II standard student at a nearby school) for Hifz course in Iqra Arabic School. At that time it was a strange experience for the little boy as he did not know even the basics of reading and writing the Arabic script. But, thanks to the wholehearted and unselfish efforts of his teachers, the boy’s interest in reading Qur’an went on increasing with every passing day. Being a responsible father, Taha Hasan had a desire to see his child as a Hafiz and his dream came true three years after sending his son to Iqra school.

“In the beginning it was a very strange experience for me. Learning the language of Quran was almost an iron nut for me. But, when I began to strive hard and follow all the assignments of my teachers, I got hold of it. Now reading Arabic is easier than any other language for me to read and I always prefer the Qur’an over other books for reading now”, says the wonder-boy, who always remembers words of Rasoolullah (s): “The best among you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it”.

By the grace of Almighty Allah, he learnt to read the entire Qur’an with thajweed within a year and a half. He then started memorising it and within the next one and half years, he had earned himself the title of Hafiz. Truly, he is one of the very few youngest huffaz of this country.

Iqra does not award the Hafiz degree to any student, unless he recites the entire Qur’an 10 times properly without seeing the text. Many students repeatedly fail in this crucial test. But, Qamar surprised his teachers by completing the first recitation test in only three days of marathon sittings! And in few weeks he passed all the 10 rounds of recitation tests.

Humbleness and gratefulness are parts of his character. He is the boy who made his parents, teachers and his town proud, but you cannot find even a small drop of pride in his behaviour, manner, or talks. Expressing gratitude to Almighty Allah for all His blessings, the boy recalls all his teachers who taught him to read and recite the words of Allah.

“All my teachers taught me the techniques of reading and reciting with lot of patience. Maulana Saalim Khaleefah Nadvi, Maulana Muhammad Faizan Nadvi, Maulana Davood Ahmad Nadvi, Maulana Nasrullah Nadvi, Maulana Althaf Nadvi and Maulana Muthahhir Nadvi were the usthads, who guided me in the past three years. I like and appreciate all of them,” says the miracle boy.

According to his usthads, Qamar is a rare talent who can understand and recite anything very quickly. Terming the special talent of Qamar as “Allah’s gift and grace”, Maulana Davood quotes from the glorious Qur’an: “...That is the grace and favour of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” (Chapter No-5, verse No-54).

“When the boy was admitted to the Hifz course, it was a challenge for us to convince him to stay in the hostel. He was always thinking about his home and mother. Gradually, he became one of the favourite students for all of us”, says Maulana Saalim Nadvi, the principal of the school.

Showering the words of encouragement upon the boy, Maulana Saalim says, “Insha Allah, he has a great future”. “We want to see him as a great Aalim. And it is the wish of his father too,” he adds to receive an appreciable smile from Qamar.

He is not only a traditional Hafiz, but also competes with other students in academic courses. Along with practicing the recitation of Qur’an, he continued his studies in the same Iqra School and passed 4 th standard with good marks while completing his Hifz course. Currently a student of 5th standard in Peace English Medium School, Mangalore, the boy aims to join Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow, after completing his SSLC.

Encouraging the boy, the principal Saalim, (who is still thinking about the future of his beloved student, even after his admission to another school), says that one cannot be successful man in this world or hereafter, unless he possesses religious knowledge.
