Mangalore: A Passing Glimpse Of Change

June 23, 2010

Love it or Hate it, but you cannot sideline it. Mangalore is making the Headlines more frequently than ever before. A transformation of a larger magnitude is taking place. It’s a new shift, but towards betterment or disaster?

Once upon a time, many Indians, leave alone the world didn’t know where this place actually is. Peace prevailed and life sailed slowly and smoothly. Rightly it was called “Rome of the East”.

“Steeped in History, Blessed By Nature,
Sanctified by faith, Alive with wildlife,
Dotted with destinations.”

What a way to describe Downtown Kudla!! But surprisingly today the horizons have changed. We hear more news of bad than good. Are we responsible partly or wholly for the situation that is today? Do we play our meagre fine role in society? Blaming the system or government will do little to ease our suffering!! The electricity is uncertain; roads are good for animal grazing. So on and so forth. The infamous pub attack and repeated church and mosque attacks have been witnessed. The Police was hand in gloves and did not take the complaint, but why this happened? It’s simple, because the people were mild at them. Wake up friends; this is a major catastrophe that our land is facing.

MANGALORE
A recent survey put Mangalore on the most polluted city map. It would only get worse with the Real Estate market going up, and trees being replaced by modern high rise. In fact, the city is transforming at such a speed that some predictors believe within 10 years, it would be the next hub like Bombay or Bangalore. Moreover, by and large, many outsiders within the country and abroad are coming here for different purposes. I wouldn’t want to name them but if you take a close look, they are threat to the children of the soil. We need to understand this crux reality before we get wiped out into mortal peril. Each person, ever worthy has to contribute his bit, because this is not an individual job but needs the larger co-operation of all. All coming together will put things in the right place. We need to start, right here, right now.

The malls are slowly rising up, the vehicles are multiplying, more educational opportunities booming up, even more companies seriously planning to invest out here; but sadly the city goes to sleep by 8 p.m. or an occasional 9 p.m. there are hardly buses available beyond that. This change is yet to come, but I am certain it would take a shift soon, God grant it may!! But again, the mindset must change, hardwork should be put in, shops should stay up longer, buses should run, and other immediate changes need to be brought about.

Health sector is trying all it can to curtail the malarial dilemma. As Mangalore continues to be endemic to the disease, Filaria is gaining ground too. The suffering of the patients is infinite. But at the same time, the beauty of Kudla cannot be ignored, there are many archaeological spots of sight –seeing interest, the numerous beaches are an ideal get away from urban city lights, all in all it is a fine place to be, barring certain issues and concerns.

People have to open their clogged–in thinking and collectively play a role in giving a newer face to the city. We are men who believe that if everyone is suffering, it’s normal and acceptable, when the concern hits us (personally), only then do we jump around. Let us evolve harder and better in our own surrounding and the rest will fall in place (As humans are good in copying whatever, however).

We ought to select the right people to the government offices - those competent enough, the younger ones and not the old & aging, distinguish between what is true and what is false, and come forward to right the wrong and tackle hard the tough ones. Let’s be the change, we dream for. Get started.
