Kharagpur, Mar 28: Reaching out to the Muslims in poll-bound West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paused for several minutes in the middle of his speech at a poll rally here as a muezzin called for prayers at a nearby mosque.

Mr. Modi, who had begun a tirade against the ruling Trinamool Congress and the CPI(M)-Congress alliance, was in full flow when he abruptly stopped his speech as the muezzin started delivering Azaan or Adhan (prayer call).

The rally was being held at the BNR maidan here, which is located behind the Golbari Masjid.

“This is our parampara [heritage]. We should pay respect to all religions and respect their rituals and customs. We should be respectful so that the unity of India is maintained,” Mr. Modi said after the muezzin's call for evening prayers had ended.

The Prime Minister then spoke for about 20 minutes more at the rally, which saw a huge turnout.

Four worshippers, who identified themselves as Aftab and Sheikh Firdaus from Kharagpur town and Imtiaz Ali and Amir Khan from Midnapore town were all praise for Modi for "respecting" all religions.

We appreciate PM's gesture hope it will turn out to be deeds and not just an election stunt.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
