Shocking! Two workers asphyxiate in dry manhole

September 25, 2014

Bangalore, Sep 25: Two casual labourers were asphyxiated after inhaling noxious fumes from a manhole in Hennur on Wednesday.

The tragic incident occurred at Thuba Layout in Saraipalya on Thanisandra Main Road under Hennur police limits. The labourers were found dead inside the 20 ft-deep manhole.

The dead are Sridhar, 22, of Davangere and Pandre, 25, a native of Bellary, who stayed at Geddalahalli in the City. A third person, Chandrashekar, too fell into the manhole attempting to rescue the labourers but he was saved by passers-by.

According to the police, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) had awarded a contract to private firm Ecofil to connect the manhole with the storm water drain by laying a pipe. The firm had hired three daily wage labourers to survey the area and gauge the water flow before starting work.

The police said Sridhar, Pandre and Chandrashekar had gone to the work spot at 11:40 am. In order to check the depth of the manhole, Sridhar lifted its lid. Hit by the poisonous fumes, he fell into the manhole. Pandre tried to grab Sridhar as he was collapsing but failed and followed him into the pit.

A third labourer, Chandrashekar, went to the rescue of Pandre and slipped into the pit as well. Some passers-by heard Chandrashekar screaming for help and pulled him out.

He was sent to a nearby hospital. They also alerted the fire personnel and police. An assistant fire service officer said: œAround eight firemen helped fish out the bodies of the two dead labourers after a 20-minute search. The bodies were sent to Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.

The police have virtually given a clean chit to the private firm based on a preliminary inquiry. The officer said: œWe suspected the labourers were hired to clean the manhole, which is against the law. But on enquiry, the authorities concerned confirmed that the labourers were to lay a connecting pipe.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Mangaluru, Nov 30: A 22-year-old college student succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital in Mangaluru today, days after she was hit by a goods tempo while crossing a road in Padubidri.

The deceased has been identified as Preksha, a resident of Nadsalu Billitota in Padubidri. The fatal incident occurred as Preksha, who was returning home after completing her examination, attempted to cross the service road towards Mangaluru. She was struck by a goods tempo approaching from the Udupi side, causing her to fall and sustain a severe head injury.

Prompt action from local residents ensured she received immediate first aid before being rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru for specialised treatment. Despite medical efforts, she passed away while undergoing care.

Preksha was a student at Karavali College, Vamanjoor on the outskirts of Mangaluru city. The tragedy is compounded by the fact that she belonged to a financially vulnerable family, having previously lost her father. She is survived by her mother and brother.

A case related to the accident has been registered at the Padubidri police station, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. The incident highlights the growing concerns over road safety, particularly on busy service roads, and serves as a tragic reminder of the human cost of traffic accidents.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
