Mangaluru: College student assaults principal after being denied hall ticket

Mangaluru, Oct 20: In a bizarre incident, a final year degree student of a prestigious private college in the city allegedly assaulted the principal near his chamber and went absconding on Thursday.

The accused, Mohammed Shahnawaz, a final year degree student of Milagres College, resorted to the violent step after the principal refused to give him the hall ticket for upcoming semester examination on grounds of attendance shortage.

Rev Fr Michael Santumayar, the principal, got admitted to a private hospital in the city after the unexpected assault.

It is said that when the principal was coming out of his chamber during the lunch break, the angry student assaulted him and threatened of dire consequences if he doesn't allow him to appear for examination.

A case has been registered against the student under Indian Penal Code (IPC) 306, 324 and 504 at Managluru North Police Station. The police are searching for the student.

Well one has to understand if the rule of the university states that less than particular number of days absent will be denied to attend the exam then it is the right of college to not allow the student to write the exam. if the principal has followed the Rule of the university he must follow the law.

Mangaluru Airport turns political stage: Congress workers chant for DKS as Venugopal arrives

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
