Belgaum, Jun 10: Amidst sporadic violence in Maharashtra, similar communal clashes broke out in Karnataka 's Belgaum on Sunday night and in the early hours of Monday over rumours about a provocative message against a particular community being posted on social media.

Police have arrested 29 people from both the communities in connection with the incidents. Sensitive areas have been cordoned off and prohibitory orders clamped until Tuesday morning.
It all started around 11.15 pm on Sunday when stones and soft drink bottles were thrown at houses at Khadak Galli, Jalgar Galli, Ghee Galli, Bhadkal Galli, Kakatives Road and the surrounding areas. Vehicles parked outside houses were also damaged.
Policemen forcibly entered houses, looking for troublemakers. But residents alleged that many “innocent” men asleep in their homes were picked up when they were in nothing but undergarment. They also said the police had let off the real culprits.
Police kept tight vigil in the sensitive areas on Monday.
The intermittent clashes started after derogatory remarks were allegedly made about Chhatrapati Shivaji and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray on a social media website on June 1. Though the past couple of days were relatively peaceful, two groups clashed on Sunday night.
