Mangaluru, Mar 26: When a language has the openness to accept from other languages, it will have the opportunity to grow, said Prof B A Vivek Rai.
Speaking at the release of special edition 'Belkiri' and progress review programme of Beary-Kannada-English dictionary at Beary Academy office at Attavar here on Wednesday, he said that the dictionary would improve harmonious relations between communities as it would increase the understanding of the Beary language among others.
Speaking after releasing the special edition, Mangaluru Urban Development Authority president Ibrahim Kodichal said that development was not possible in the coastal district without communal harmony. Because of the communal atmosphere, several businessmen were hesitating to invest in the district. Progress has taken a hit in Dakshina Kannada due to communalism, he said, adding that there was a need to give stress to peace and harmony among people from all religions.
He urged that the academies should also play a role in uniting people from different communities.
Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy president B A Mohammed Haneef said that the making of the Beary-Kannada-English trilingual dictionary was underway and efforts would be made to complete the dictionary in a year. With all words having their own value in Beary language, new words will also be included in the dictionary, he told the audience.
Kannada Sahitya Parishad former president Harikrishna Punaroor, journalist B M Haneef, Akhila Bharat Beary Parishad honorary president Abdul Majeed Sooralpady, Prof B M Ichlamgodu, Abdul Azeez Baikampady and others were present in the programme.
Academy registrar Umarabba welcomed the gathering.
