Cong, BJP leaders, workers celebrate victory of their candidates in DK

Mangaluru: Dec 30: The party workers and leaders of both BJP and Congress celebrated the victory of their candidates Kota Srinivas Poojary and Pratapchandra Shetty in the Legislative Council election, here on Wednesday.

Agents from both the parties, who were present at the counting centre at Lady Hill Victoria Girls Convent, consistently kept track of the trends by visiting all counting tables. The counting process was over by 11.30 am and the results were clear. A significant number of party workers from both the parties too eagerly waited for the results to be declared.

As the Deputy Commissioner announced the results, the party workers rejoiced and raised victory slogans, waving the party flags, for their party and the winning candidates. Sweets were also distributed.

District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai rushed to the counting centre soon after the results were announced. Rai was thronged by the partymen, who congratulated him for the victory of the party. Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader, MLC Ivan D’Souza and other leaders were present.

BJP candidate Kota Srinivas Poojary, who was present inside the counting hall, was mobbed by his followers. The partymen rejoiced upon the victory of Kota by garlanding him and placing a ‘Mysuru peta’ on his head.

MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik had also brought a garland to the winning candidate from Congress Pratapchandra Shetty.

He said that he respects the mandate of the voters, who have sent a message to the society.

When Shetty arrived at the counting centre around 1.20 pm, the party workers raised slogans in his favour. They garlanded him and lifted him in joy.

Gowda said the election results depicted the faith of people on the State government.

He thanked the voters and urged the BJP leader K?S?Eshwarappa, who had declared of taking retirement from politics, if the Congress party won a single seat more than the BJP.

Party General Secretary P S Gangadhar, Youth Congress President Muhammed Fawaz, leaders Beera Moideen, Juliana Crasta and others were present.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B. Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
