Mangaluru, Apr 11: A week after nearly one hundred activists of Popular Front of India courted arrest by staging a protest against police atrocity in Mangaluru, a Muslim leader of Congress in Dakshina Kannada has compared the agitating organisation to Bajrang Dal, a Hindutva hardline outfit infamous for communal violence across the country.
Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, Ibrahim Kodichal, the ad-hoc president of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee, condemned both police atrocity on Ahmed Qureshi, a Katipalla based youth, and subsequent “illegal” protest by PFI, which spurred the police to resort to baton charge.
“Inhumanly torturing an accused is not acceptable. If a policeman tortures any suspect in the name of interrogation, we should raise voice against within the ambit of law. However, staging protests without obtaining prior permission and attempting to gherao the office of city police commissioner is nothing but a direct imitation of the culture of Bajrang Dal,” Mr Kodicahl said.
“Custodial torture and illegal protest that spoils the lives of many individuals, both are unconstitutional. We should learn to respect the law and uphold the constitutional values while fighting for any cause,” he reiterated.
He also said that elected representatives of Congress party from Dakshina Kannada have already brought the issue of alleged custodial torture to the notice of Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara and the latter has promised necessary action against the guilty after a thorough probe into the matter.
