Udupi, Mar 12: Thanking the voters of coastal district, Udupi Block Congress Committee President Pramod Madhwaraj has said that his party would form a Manifesto Implementation Committee to fulfill its pre poll promises.

Addressing presspersons after the victory of the Congress in Udupi CMC, Mr. Madhwaraj said that the party would Congress would give priority to implementing promises made in its manifesto for Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) elections.

He said that the Committee would comprise leaders of the party as well as eminent citizens.

The Congress won the elections to the Udupi CMC for the first time after 45 years. Though, the Congress backed independents were in power from 1997 to 2001, they had not won on Congress tickets. The BJP and earlier the Jan Sangh had been in power in Udupi since 1968.

In 2007 elections to Udupi CMC, the BJP had won 53.49 per cent of votes and got 28 seats, while the Congress got 40.63 per cent of votes and won only six seats. But now (in 2013) the Congress got 51.33 per cent of votes and won 22 seats and the BJP got 45.72 per cent of votes and won 12 seats.

Corruption in the BJP-ruled CMC, its arrogance, and lack of response to problems led to voters showing it the door. The Congress will provide a transparent and corruption-free administration. The victory of the Congress party was solely due to the efforts of its workers and leaders.

The State government should immediately announce the reservation list for the elections to the posts of president and vice-president of urban local bodies so that they could start functioning soon, Mr. Madhwaraj said.

.V. Hegde, General Secretary of district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said that people were fed up with the infighting in the BJP.

The BJP could not counter the misleading propaganda of the Congress launched against it during the elections. The Congress had used money power to purchase votes in Udupi.

“It is a matter of grave concern that even educated voters ignored the developmental projects undertaken by the BJP,” he said.

Deviprasad Shetty, president of district unit of Janata Dal (Secular), said that the voters were fed up of the corruption of the BJP in Udupi CMC.

“They did not want the 'secular vote' to get split. Hence, they decided to vote for the Congress. It is a significant verdict as the voters have ended the rule of the BJP in Udupi after 45 years. Even the educated and Hindu voters are shying away from the BJP. The Congress has benefited from it,” he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
