Kasaragod, Sep 30: The Congress appears to have kicked off its electioneering for the ensuing local body polls with top leaders of the party addressing a special party convention at the Municipal Town Hall here.

They called upon party activists to shy away from petty political differences to help the United Democratic Front (UDF) showcase impressive performance.
The Congress-led UDF would certainly script an emphatic win in the polls if the party workers fought the elections by rising above factional and group interests, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said addressing the function on Tuesday. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala were present.
The envious outcome registered by the party in the recent by-election to the Aruvikkara Assembly segment was a pointer to the need for making joint efforts at crucial juncture, he said.
Flaying Prime Minister Narendra Modi for undertaking frequent foreign trips, Mr. Chandy recalled that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had ensured his presence in New Delhi when Parliament was in session.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sudheeran warned that the party, in sharp departure from earlier stand, would take firm action against any member who contested the election as rebel candidate. Action would also be taken against those who extended support to rebels in a bid to frustrate the chances of official party candidates, he said.
Maintaining that the UDF government had taken series of steps to mitigate the plight of endosulfan victims, he alleged that the agitations spearheaded by the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF), mainly to settle political score, failed to convince the public.
In his address, Mr. Chennithala said the Communist parties in recent times had lost sense of direction and were on the verge of diffusion. The three leaders took time to vehemently criticise the ‘misrule’ of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. District Congress Committee president C.K. Sreedharan presided over the function.
