Mangaluru, Jan 5: MLC and Congress leader Ivan D'Souza said that the booth-level membership drive which was launched by the party in Dakshina Kannada district on October 28 last year would be extended from December 31 up to February 15.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, Mr D'Souza said that the membership drive was being conducted as a prelude to the gram panchayat elections and the Congress party was hoping to reach the enrollment target of 50 lakh members in the state by February 15.
Earlier, the district committee had decided to reach a target of enrolling 50 members from each of 1,700 booths in Dakshina Kannada. Now, the target has been increased to enrolling 100 members into the party from each booth, he said, adding that the objective of the party was to enroll 50 lakh new members in Karnataka.
He said that the party had a target of enrolling 1.75 lakh members under the membership drive. The party wants to build up its base before the gram panchayats go for elections in the middle of 2015, he said, adding that unlike the BJP who believed in'missed calls', the Congress party believed in meeting people at their doorsteps to enroll them as members.
All departments to accept self-attested documents
Mr D'Souza informed that the state government had notified the deputy commissioners of all the districts in the state to direct the governmental departments to accept all self-attested copies of documents henceforth.
Deputy mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation Kavitha Vasu, former mayor Shashidhar Hegde and others were present.
