Udupi, Aug 17: Demanding an end to discrimination in payment of daily wages, contract civic workers, staged a protest in front of the City Municipal Council (CMC) office here on Saturday.
The protest, which began in the morning, came to an end in the evening, after the authorities discussed the issue with the protestors and assured them that government rules would be followed.
According to the protesters, there are 31 contracted civic workers in the city. But on special occasions workers from other places are pressed into service. The latter were paid Rs. 400 to Rs. 500 per day, while the contracted workers were paid about Rs. 200 per day.
The contracted workers have been seeking parity in wages for the last two month and had submitted a memorandum to the authorities in the CMC. But there was no response to their plea. Instead they were threatened that they would be replaced by outside workers.
