Bengaluru, Sept 15: The Bengaluru City Police have made the first arrest in the grabbing of government land in Doddathogur village near Electronic City.

The police have arrested Vinod Kumar, who using a General Power of Attorney (GPA) sold the sites created on a government land. Vinod is the GPA holder for Prabhakar Reddy, a Congress leader and the prime accused in the case.

The Madiwala police had registered 22 FIRs in October 2016 against Reddy, Vinod and the then sub-registrar of BTM Layout T V Jayaprakash.

Complaint by NGO

Janaadhikaara Sangharsha Parishath (JSP), an NGO, had lodged the complaint about the encroachment with the Madiwala police. After an year of lodging the complaint, the Madiwala police have made the first arrest in the case.

South taluk

The land in question is at survey number 105 of Doddathogur village in Begur near Electronic City, Bengaluru South taluk.

Out of 10 acres and 22 guntas of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) land in survey number 105, a total of 10 acres and four guntas were allotted to private persons between 2010 and 2016.

These private persons are ‘benami’ for Reddy, who had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections from Bangalore Rural constituency in 2014 on the JD (S) ticket. Later, he joined the Congress.

A police official from the Madiwala police station said that Vinod has been arrested in one case and remanded in judicial custody. “We have arrested Vinod who is the GPA holder for Reddy. Vinod has executed sale deeds for the sites carved out of the government land in Doddathogur. We are yet to secure the original copies of the GPA from Vinod. We will obtain body warrant against Vinod in the remaining 21 cases,’’ an official said.

Need more evidence

According to the Madiwala police, they still needed more evidence to proceed against Reddy. The police said that they are trying to procure more evidence in the case.

The members of the JSP said that the police were not going after the prime accused, Reddy.

“It was only after putting relentless pressure and continuous follow-up that the police arrested Vinod who is just a GPA holder. There are sufficient evidence against Prabhakar Reddy. Yet, the police are not arresting him,’’ Adarsh R Iyer, co-president of JSP said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
