Mangaluru: Mar 31: The Dakshina Kannada district police is all set to roll out revamped beat system which will not only increase responsibility of policemen at the constabulary level but also will strengthen their relationship with the public especially in rural areas.

In a standing order dated March 24, DG&IGP Rupak Kumar Dutta had directed all SPs and police commissioners in Karnataka to implement the ‘Belagavi model’ beat system from April 1 and submit action taken report before April 15.
The revamped beat system is termed ‘Halligobba Police’ or a policeman for a village. Under this system, a police constable or head constable will be in-charge of a particular village. The in-charge policeman will be responsible for everything that transpires in the village and hence his responsibility will be more than the general duties he perform.
According to Superintendent of Police Bhushan G?Borase, a total of 250 beats have been identified in Dakshina Kannada district. The beat police will be assigned most of the duties performed by the police, such as monitoring works related to passport verification, job verification, gun licence history-sheeter, addressing women and children’s issues and so on.
The SP hopes that the beat system helps in accumulating information on criminal activities as well. He said that the beat system also entails setting up 50-member broad based all-encompassing committee that will meet once every month. This committee will have representation from all section of society and will assist the beat constable with any issues that may require attention of authorities concerned.
Mr Borase is sure that the constables can definitely shoulder additional responsibilities expected of them in the new system as most new recruits at level of police constables highly educated. This is also part of the people friendly policing that the state police top brass is focusing on, he points out.
