Mangalore, Mar 31: Konaje SI S S Meti came under severe criticism from members of Dalit community for allegedly harassing a Dalit couple on the behest of a few rich and influential people, at the monthly SC/ST grievance meet held at the Police Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Sunday.
Laxman and his wife Nalini from Amlamogar, Konaje, who were in attendance at the meet, pointed fingers at Konaje SI SS Meti for harassing them over a case involving their land.
The land measuring about 65 cents is registered in the name of Mr. Laxman and his mother Gangu. But a few rich people living in the vicinity want to create an approach road to their residences via Mr. Laxman's land and hence had been troubling him. Miffed by the trouble, Mr. Laxman approached the court and got an order in his favour whereby the court directed that status quo be maintained over the land concerned. Although Mr. Laxman even piled loads of mud in his land to block the desired pathway for the rich, Mr. Meti on the behest of the latter arrived at the spot and emptied the filled mud and even threatened to assault Mr. Laxman, his wife Ms. Nalini alleged in the meet.
In response, Mr. Meti said that he had been directed by the Assistant Commissioner to do so. Rebutting this claim, S P Anand, DSS leader, said that the court has already ordered status quo on the land in question and the AC's directive was concerning the adjacent government land and not Mr. Laxman's land.
Later, speaking to Coastaldigest,com, Mr. Anand said that further legal action would be sought against the Konaje SI. “We will not leave it at that. We will file a contempt of court case against him”, he said.
Sadashiva, a Dalit representative demanded an explanation from the police officials for no action against Pandeshwar police constable Shaju who had assaulted him in an intoxicated state while he was not on duty. In response, P Dharmaiah, DCP, said that the constable concerned is under DE (Departmental Enquiry) and will be punished if found guilty.
