Mangaluru, Dec 28: Dalit representatives raised the issue of the irregularity of SC/ST meetings held at police stations in Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate limits at the monthly grievance meeting held on Sunday.
In the meeting chaired by Mangaluru City police commissioner R Hithendra, Dalit representative Ramesh Kotian said that SC/ST meetings were not being held regularly every month at police stations, while Dalit leaders were not informed of the meetings which were scheduled without prior notice. Mr Hithendra assured them that meetings would be held regularly from January onwards and people would be informed of them beforehand.
Mr Kotian also expressed the need for CCTV cameras near colonies where Dalits resided in an effort to reduce atrocities on them. DCP (Crime & Traffic) Vishnuvardhana replied that few strategic spots had been identified for installing CCTV cameras in areas where crimes occurred frequently in Commissionerate limits.
Another representative Raghuveer Suttarpet said that a daily wage worker Sunil who had been working with a Yakshagana troupe for four years was being harassed by his employer when he resigned from the troupe in Mulki police station limits. In addition to this, without lodging a complaint on behalf of the daily wage worker, a police constable from Mulki station threatened Sunil not to raise the issue. This is not acceptable, he told the police commissioner.
To this, Mr Hithendra replied that he would look into the matter and order an enquiry in this regard.
Mukesh Kumar complained that a lot of citizens were being cheated by mobile shop owners in city limits as they did not recharge the mobile numbers provided with the amount paid to them. Despite several assurances, the mobile shop owners do not recharge the amount paid to them. By resorting to this, the customers are cheated of their money, he grieved.
Girish Kumar raised the issue of rise in number of motor accidents because of over-speeding by buses and tippers, and demanded that the driving licenses of bus drivers caught in accidents should be cancelled.
The police commissioner and DCP promised to look into the complaints and take necessary action.
