Mangalore, May 22: Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim pulled up the officials of Mangalore City Corporation and other urban local bodies (ULBs) in the district over lack of progress in development works such as collection of solid waste and utilization of SFC grant funds at a review meet on Thursday.

Speaking at the progress review meeting at his office, Mr Ibrahim expressed his displeasure at the lack of progress in the door-to-door collection of solid waste in the city corporation and ULB limits in the district. The solid waste management system will be effective only if there is door-to-door collection of waste from houses every day. Daily collection of waste should be taken into consideration, he told officials from the city corporation, directing them to conduct an assessment of the impact of door-to-door collection in the wards of Mangalore city corporation.

According to the official figures, the MCC is collecting solid waste from 1,45,316 residences and 43,583 commercial buildings in the wards of the city corporation.

He also warned the officials to monitor the practice of manual scavenging in the city limits and enforce the ban on it.

Mr Ibrahim also directed the officials in each taluk to maintain the parks coming under the city corporation and various municipalities. He directed them to identify additional land necessary for the expansion of each park in the district and look into their maintenance by utilising the funds allotted to them.

Under the Vajpayee Urban Housing Scheme, out of the 510 beneficiaries approved in 2012-13, only 171 houses had been construction till date and construction of 156 houses was under progress. Out of the remaining, construction of 50 houses had not yet begun, while approvals for 133 houses had been rejected or blocked, according to the official figures.

Since the percentage of achievement in the scheme was merely 34, the deputy commissioner said that the performance was dismal. He said that the collection of water and advertisement tax that was pending should be done at the earliest, and also warned the officials of suspension upon failing to discharge their duties.

He told the concerned officials to take a serious interest in having bigger parks and look into their beautification. He further instructed the officials to get the water tested after purification under the underground drainage scheme before letting it flow into the river.

He also instructed that the cleaning of storm water drains should be completed in all taluks in view of the monsoons.

SFC grant funds

The figures showed an expenditure of Rs 6.94 crores spent towards development works undertaken in the 22.75% scheme under the SFC united grants and municipal revenue, while Rs 3.79 crores were pending. It also showed an expenditure of Rs 1.10 crores spent towards development works undertaken in the 7.25% scheme under the SFC united grants and municipal revenue, while Rs 37.06 lakhs were pending.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
