Deve Gowda blames Siddaramaiah for luring JD(S) leaders

Bangalore, Aug 18: JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda on Sunday alleged that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been instigating his party legislators to quit the party.

Addressing reporters, he said some JD(S) legislators were planning to join the Congress. “Those who want to leave the party are free to do so. I will not stop them from doing so, nor will I bother about them. Those who think money is must to survive in politics and those who are unwilling to participate in the organisational activities, are free to go,” he said.

Speculations are rife in political circles that some of the party legislators may hop over to the ruling Congress. The JD(S) legislators feel that the party has no future.

However, none of the legislators has so far openly expressed their willingness to quit the party. It is said that Gowda is upset with some senior legislators for questioning his hold over the party.

“Some legislators are worried about their future. I have suggestions that will put an end to their concerns

“Those who are loyal to the party can stay. And those who are of the view that money is must in politics, can either join the Congress or the BJP,” Gowda said.

Blaming Siddaramaiah for creating confusion in the party, he alleged that the chief minister had been trying to lure the JD(S) legislators. In the recently-held legislature session, Siddaramaiah had asked JD(S) MLC Sandesh Nagaraj to quit the party and citied his example of having become the chief minister after quitting the party.

He said he has convened a meeting of loyal party workers on Monday at the Palace Grounds in Bangalore to discuss strengthening the party.

The JD(S) leader, however, chose not to reply to a question as to what action the party will take against those who keep off the meeting.

Asked about the cash-for-vote controversy involving his son H D Kumaraswamy, Gowda said, “Leaders like Y S V Datta, Abdul Azim, H C Neeravari and B R Gurudev were made MLCs by Kumaraswamy. Has he taken money from all of them,” he questioned and added that he knew how the national parties nominated members to the Upper House of the legislature.

He said he will camp in his parliamentary constituency Hassan for three days a week and listen to people's grievances. He also said he will tour the State in order to strengthen the party.

Gowda said his party will maintain equal-distance from both the Congress and the BJP in the byelection to the three Assembly constituencies, but the local party leaders have been given the freedom to support any of these national parties.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
