Mangalore, Oct 15: The Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI), which is the apex intelligence agency under the Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC) for combating evasion of Central Excise Duty and Service Tax, has established a new regional unit at Mangalore.
The office was formally inaugurated by D.Purushotham,IRS, Commissioner of Customs, Mangalore on Wednesday. Lakshmi Hande Puri, IRS, Commissioner of Income Tax, Mangalore and Dr. M. Subramanyam, IRS, Commissioner of Central Excise & Service Tax, Mangalore were the guests of honour and presided over the inauguration.
DGCEI is an arm of Central Board of Excise & Customs functioning under the Department of Revenue and Ministry of Finance. This intelligence organization focuses on the detection of evasion of Central Excise duty and Service Tax.
The Mangalore Regional Unit would function under the control of the Zonal Unit at Bangalore. The Bangalore Zonal Unit has two other regional units at Belgaum and Kochi. The newly established Mangalore Regional Unit would spearhead the anti-evasion activities in the revenue districts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysore and Shimoga. The above districts fall under the jurisdiction of Commissionerates of Central Excise and Service Tax of Mangalore and Mysore respectively.
The Mangalore Regional Unit is set up near Nantur Circle, Mangalore. It is headed by a Deputy Director and would have strength of three Senior Intelligence Officers and 6 Intelligence Officers.
