Kasaragod, Jun 14: With a youth confirmed to have died of dengue fever and a rise in the number of patients visiting hospitals, the district administration has sounded an alert.
An unconfirmed report suggested that Prakash Kini, 48, hailing from Kanhangad also died of fever on Saturday.
As many as 551 fever patients had visited government hospitals where 36 patients were being treated for fever, they said.
A few patients are found to be approaching private hospitals here and some in Mangalore hospitals in the hope seeking better medical care.
Fresh five confirmed and 90 with suspected cases of dengue were registered.
Dedicated vector control squads were being fanned out in vulnerable hilly hamlets of the district which has reported an increase in number of fever cases, a senior Health official here said.
However, the tendency to leave water accumulation in rubber and areca farms, leading to making the spots easy breeding ground for mosquitoes, have made things difficult for ensuring cleanliness, he said.
Meanwhile, a few organisations have taken out marches to the general hospital here to protest the unhygienic surroundings in and around the hospital.
