Mangaluru, Jan 14: Property owners in Dakshina Kannada district police limits had a lot to cheer at the district police office premises on Monday. Thanks to a move by the district police top brass, the owners got back property worth Rs 55 lakh at an impressive property returns parade organized by district police. The property was recovered by personnel of 12 law and order police stations in the police unit during 2015 and handed over to the rightful owners here.
Incidentally, district police authorities with permission from the respective jurisdictional court had already returned property worth Rs 6 lakh earlier and the rest were returned at the parade. The property returned varied from two-wheelers, four-wheelers, pick up vans, areca nut, rubber sheets, brass and copper pooja items, cash, gold ornaments which were reported stolen in cases of theft and robbery registered in these police station limits and subsequently recovered.
Sharanappa SD, superintendent of police, while lauding the police personnel for effecting recovery of property said people have emotional attachment for items such as gold ornaments and feel distraught to lose it in acts of crime. The parade initially scheduled for December was put off for administrative reasons, SP said adding police had returned some property to their owners earlier. Incidentally, the district police unit last held such property returns parade in 2009.
Averring that the property returned at the parade could consist of 50% of property lost by owners, Sharanappa said police efforts will constantly be on to detect all cases and return property so recovered to the owners with permission from the courts. Sharanappa also urged property owners to pay due attention to securing their property using the latest anti-burglar alarms, anti-vehicle theft alarms and other technological solutions available in plenty in the market.
