DK SDPI candidate files nomination, vows to fight against communalism

Mangalore, Mar 25: On Tuesday, SDPI candidate Mohammed Haneef Khan filed his nomination papers at the office of Deputy Commissioner to contest from Dakshina Kannada constituency, along with substitute (proxy) candidate Mohammed Akram Hasan.

The candidates and party workers undertook a procession from Ambedkar Circle before filing the nomination papers and arrived at DC office.

The two candidates were accompanied by JD(S) leaders Deviprasad Shetty and Sushil Noronha and SDPI leaders Abdul Majeed and Mohammed Kunhi.

The state units of JD(S) and SDPI have formed a pre-poll alliance with each other, to emerge as a stronger party in the Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination papers, Haneef Khan said that the party would against the rampant corruption and communalism spreading in the state. Both the Congress and the BJP have misused their power. The situation now demands an alternative from both the parties, which will be provided by the JD(S)-SDPI alliance, he said.

“Our agenda is fight against corruption and communalism, along with empowerment of the labour class. Since SDPI is a cadre-based party, the cadres will undertake door-to-door campaigning. We are confident of gaining votes not only from Muslims, but also from non-Muslim electorates,” he said.

Congress and BJP will not win '

The SDPI candidate, hailing from B C Road, said that the Congress played tricks prior to every election to entice the votes of minorities, while the BJP was merely highlighting Narendra Modi as the party had lost its credibility.

Speaking on his stand on the controversial Yettinahole project, Mr Khan said that the party had every intention of opposing the project, and would oppose it in an intense manner.

JD(S) Udupi district president Deviprasad Shetty said that both Congress and BJP were playing communal ' politics while being internally unstable. The party is committed to the upliftment of poor and oppressed classes, he said, adding that the alliance with SDPI would prove successful in the elections.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CEN police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly posting provocative and misleading content on an Instagram page named “mr_a_titude”, targeting the Bajpe police.

Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H identified the arrested as Abhishek M, a resident of Katipalla in Mangaluru.

A case has been registered at the Bajpe Police Station under Sections 353(1)(c), 353(2), 56, and 57 read with Section 189 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the post.

According to police, the accused uploaded a photograph of a hotel on the Instagram page and alleged that accused persons in a murder case under the Bajpe police jurisdiction were being given “royal treatment” by the police, including being served beef meals daily from the hotel.

The post further accused the police of supporting criminals, misusing their authority, and betraying public trust. Police said the content was provocative in nature and aimed at inciting public outrage against the police.

Following the post, a case was registered at the Bajpe police station, and further investigation was transferred to the CEN police station.

Police records indicate that the accused has a criminal history, with multiple cases registered against him, including murder, attempt to murder, assault, and robbery at the Surathkal Police Station, and one case at the Kaup Police Station.

The Commissioner said the accused was traced and arrested using technical evidence.
