Mangalore, Sep 11: Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat adds another feather to its cap of laurels, becoming the only zilla panchayat which won the Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar (PSP) for the year 2013-14, under the Panchayats Empowerment and Accountability Incentive Scheme (PEAIS).

The DK has also garnered praise for becoming the only zilla panchayat to secure the award in the current year.
Recognizing the achievements of the DK zilla panchayat in its administration, assembly proceedings, decisions, action plans, approval of budgets, inspection of developmental works, education, nourishment, health and sanitation, the union government nominated the body for the award.
Attention was also brought to the fact that it is the first time in the state that low-budget napkin management and disposal units were set up for students in six higher primary schools and 57 high schools in the district. It was also noticed that a sanitary napkin production unit was set up in Laila village in Belthangady taluk at a cost of Rs 1.23 lakhs which provides napkins to around 10, 250 girls in government schools.
The zilla panchayat has also been commended for its efforts towards solid waste management and efficient disposal of waste, especially in Ujire, Kadaba and Ganjimutt village panchayats.
DK Zilla Panchayat had also won the Nirmal Gram Puraskar by the union government in 2011-12, which was the only zilla panchayat in the state to bag the award.
