Dubai: Countdown begins for GPL-2015

Dubai, Sep 20: As many as eight teams have started preparations for the much awaited Gulf Premiere League 2015 cricket tournament scheduled for October 15 and 16 in the United Arab Emirates.

Most of the participating teams are expected to have a few internationally renowned cricket players. The two-day tournament will be held at the ICC Cricket Academy Grounds in Dubai Sports City.

Besides Bollywood stars will be part of the first of his kind cricket tournament which is a considered as a landmark event in the history of hard tennis ball cricket.

As part of the preparations for the tournament, a get-together of the team owners and captains was recently held at the Majalis of GPL 2015 Chairman Shaikh Mohammed Sharief.

Speaking on the occasion, Zakariya Bajpe, the chairman of Al Muzain Group KSA, who is the title sponsor of the tournament, wished all the teams a good luck and requested all the players to abide by the rules and regulations laid by the organisers and to play with sportsman spirit.

GPL 2015 president Sadiuq Kaup welcomed the gathering. GPL 2015 executive committee member Mohammed Shabbir explained the rules and regulations to the team owners and captains. GPL 2015 Organisers Canute Kelarai, K Mohammed Niyaz Farangipete, Imran, Firoz were present.

During the meeting the fixtures for the tournament were drawn. The teams in Pool A are: Al Muzain Royal Synergy – Saudi Arabia East, SBK International - Qatar, Nafis Hurricanes – Abu Dhabi, Northern Shine – Dubai South. Pool B teams are: Kuwait Raiders – Kuwait, Amaco Warriors – Saudi Arabia West, Khushi Super Kings – Dubai North, Royal Hawks – Sharjah.

FIXTURES

There will be 7 Indian players in each team and the other 4 players can be from other nations. The league matches will be played on October 15 at two grounds.

Each team from Pool A and Pool B will play 3 matches of 10 overs each within their pool to qualify for the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be a knockout round of two matches and 15 overs. The 4 qualified teams of both the pools will clash against opposite pool teams to get entry to the finals. The final match will be of 20 overs.

The winners will get a cash prize and a special trophy designed for the tournament, while the runner-up team too will get a cash prize and a trophy.

Best batsman of the tournament, best bowler of the tournament, man of the match in the final, man of the series and highest six hitter in the tournament also will be awarded.

Fun, music and excitement and games will be part of the event and the organisers have requested all cricket loving people of the region to be part of the event.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B. Ahmed Mudassir and Mr. Nissar Fakeer Mohammed, along with the distinguished guests of honour Mr. B. A. Nazeer and Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar. In their inspiring addresses, the guests encouraged the graduating students and appreciated the dedicated efforts of the management, faculty, and students.

The annual report was presented by the Principal, Mr. Abdul Majeed S, highlighting the institution’s academic progress, notable achievements, and extracurricular accomplishments during the academic year.

The presidential address was delivered by the esteemed Chairman of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasized the vital role of education in empowering women and shaping responsible citizens. He also stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and perseverance in achieving success.

Cultural programmes and academic recognitions formed an integral part of the celebration, showcasing the talents and achievements of the students. The graduation ceremony was a proud moment for the outgoing students as they were formally conferred degrees and wished success in their future endeavours.

Ms. Mashmooma Fathima served as the Master of Ceremonies. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Fathima Nida, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Ayisha Suhana.

The event successfully achieved its objectives and was highly appreciated by the guests and attendees.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
