Mangalore, Jun 4: Demanding the release of innocent youths in the murder case of Bajrang Dal activist Rajesh Poojary, the district unit of DYFI launched a 24-hour hunger strike in front of the deputy commissioner 's office here on Wednesday.
Family members of teh arrested youth also took part in the hunger strike which was inaugurated by DYFI state president Muneer Katipalla at the venue.
Speaking after inaugurating the hunger strike, he said that three innocent youth from Mallur in Bantwal taluk had been arrested under false charges of the murder of Bajrang Dal activist Rajesh Poojary, who was killed on March 21. The police have wrongly arrested innocent youth from three families in Mallur village without any basis or factual evidence. The families of the arrested youth have alleged that the police bowed to the pressure of saffron organisations who had given the police an ultimatum till March 31 to arrest the culprits in the murder case. Fearing a severe backlash, the police have fixed the three innocent youth in the murder case, he said.
Mr Katipalla said that the political representatives of the district had not raised concern against the arrests of the youth. Although district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai is aware that the arrested youth have been wrongly accused of the crime, he has not taken any action to release them or urge for a re-investigation in the murder case, he said.
He said that the police and the government had failed to uphold justice in the investigation of the murder case. Arresting youth from poor families such as Hussain, who sells pickles for a living, Irshad, who earns his living as a coolie and Imran who works as a lorry driver, for the murder of an activist is sheer injustice, he said, adding that the organisation would resort to intense protests if the arrested youth were not released.
Members participating in the hunger-strike have also demanded a re-investigation in the case. The 24-hour hunger strike will continue till 11 a.m. on Thursday.
