Mangalore, Jan 3: Thousands of Muslims in the city celebrated the Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed on Saturday.
Homes and institutions belonging to Muslims besides Masjids, Dargas and Madrasas were decked with flags, buntings and banners to mark the day, considered by a section of Muslims to be the most blessed in Islamic calendar.
Madrasa children took out Milad rallies in various parts of the city. Hundreds of children took part in the Milad rally held at Bunder area of Mangaluru.
Different programmes were organised by some Muslim organisations to project the life and disseminate the teachings of the final Prophet as part of the festival. Preachers spoke about the significance of celebrating the Prophet's birthday in Milad-meetings organized in some mosques. Manqoos Maulood, a book which glorifies the Prophet, was recited at various mosques and homes.
Senior clerics and Muslim community leaders have counselled restraint and low noise levels during celebrations. Elders had asked the youth to celebrate the Prophet's birthday with decorum and decency.
"We must celebrate his birthday ” but use the day to pray and do charitable works," said an elderly Sunni cleric.
However some Muslim organisations and scholars strongly oppose annual Eid Milad celebration arguing that such a practice was borrowed from other faiths.
