Speaking after inaugurating Social transformation day' organised by Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, Dakshina Kannada as part of 123rd birth anniversary celebrations of Dr B R Ambedkar at Town Hall here on Monday, he said that Ambedkar had envisaged the exploitation and oppression of the poor, downtrodden, backward classes and women over 60 years ago while drafting the Indian Constitution. He had dreamt of a society free from casteism and had advocated abolition of caste system in the country over the years. However, without real empowerment, the lower classes have the society have remained backward even after 66 years of independence, he said.
Stressing on the need for empowerment of the backward and marginalised sections of the society, he encouraged people to consider education as a priority and have knowledge of the legal system. “We only have the option of adopting a constitutional way of struggle in a legal manner. We should know the legal acts enshrined in the constitution while proceeding on a legal form of struggle,” he said.
He further said that when it came to studying political science, people wanted to study the teachings of Aristotle, but did not wish to deliberate on the principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution. Instead, the constitution is being treated as an optional subject and not encouraged for compulsory reading. This is injustice to the system of democracy in the country, he said.
He also observed that although several directives were issued when it comes to celebration of our independence day, there was a decrease in the directives issued, along with decrease in people, while observing Ambedkar Jayanti.
